Heart of the Journey is the story of a local woman's journey from Broome to Taiji in Japan, to find her Japanese father, and back again. Lucy grew up thinking she was Aboriginal. But when she was in her twenties, her dying Aboriginal father told her that he was not her true father, that her real father was a Japanese pearl diver. This was confirmed by Lucy's Bardi mother who also told her that her father had gone back to Japan soon after her birth and that he had loved and nursed her proudly as a small baby. This story - both personal and a part of Broome's living history - will be told in a documentary slide and sound installation, photographed and recorded on location in Broome, Perth, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Taiji. The evening will begin with the Goolarrgon Dancers from One Arm Point and will conclude with a Japanese dancer, representing the two cultures that make up Lucy's identity and give rise to her story. Tickets are available from Pearl Luggers.
